HISTORY

La Rondinaia

La Rondinaia was built in 1927 at the request of Lucylle, daughter of Lord Grimthorpe (Ernest William Beckett), who also conceived Villa Cimbrone, with which it initially shared the park. The idea for the villa emerged around 1915, with the design entrusted to Nicola Mansi and the construction carried out by the master builder from Ravello, Francesco Amato.

Strapiombo sul mare

Unlike traditional residences, La Rondinaia is located at the far end of the park, nestled into the rock and perched above the sea. This privileged position offers breathtaking views directly from its windows, balconies, and terraces. In 2001, Catherine Fairweather wrote: “Frankly, this framed view is distracting. Is it possible to remain immune to such beauty?” Over time, Lucylle separated La Rondinaia from Villa Cimbrone, turning it into an independent residence and a lively cultural hub. It hosted debates, concerts, and performances, becoming an intellectual salon for the English community in Ravello and a sought-after destination for celebrities, artists, and prominent figures, drawn by its beauty, privacy, and the warm hospitality of its owners.

Ravello

From 1972, for about 33 years, the villa served as the retreat of American writer Gore Vidal. Inspired by the landscape, he wrote many of his works there and hosted numerous 20th-century celebrities visiting Ravello./p>

FAQ

Are children welcome?

While we adore your little ones, we've decided to make all the events adults-only

Will there be meal options for guests with dietary restrictions or allergies?

Absolutely! Please let us know about any dietary restrictions on your final RSVP, and we'll ensure you have a meal you can enjoy

Are there cars in Ravello?

Ravello is a timeless, enchanting town where the historic center is completely pedestrian-only. No cars or scooters circulate here. You will arrive at a drop-off point (usually Piazza Duomo), and from there continue on foot to your hotel or venue.

Should I expect stairs and hills?

Yes. Ravello rests high above the Amalfi Coast, and part of its charm lies in its stairways, cobblestone paths, and gentle climbs and descents. Every step reveals a new view, whether of the sea, the gardens, or the winding streets.

What about luggage?

No need to worry—most hotels offer porter service. Upon your arrival, porters will meet you and ensure your luggage is taken safely to your room.

Is it easy to get around?

Absolutely. Ravello is a compact town, and everything is within a short walking distance. Do keep in mind, however, that some paths involve steps or slopes.

What about families and elderly guests?

Ravello is welcoming to all, though strollers and wheelchairs can be challenging on stairs and cobblestones. Families often find baby carriers more practical, and hotels are always happy to assist guests with reduced mobility.

What kind of shoes should I bring?

For exploring the town, we recommend comfortable flat shoes or sandals with good support. For wedding celebrations, if you would like to wear heels, consider wedges or block heels—stylish yet practical for Ravello’s charming stone streets.

What is the weather like in May?

May is one of the loveliest months to be in Ravello. Days are usually warm and sunny, with average temperatures between 18–24°C (65–75°F). Evenings can be a little cooler, so we suggest bringing a light jacket or wrap for comfort.
